Zoomit: SD Card Reader, for iPhone

8 02 2010

Zoom Media Plus, have announced a SD card reader for iPhone, called “Zoomit“. It connects to the dock connector of your iPhone or iPod Touch, and comes with a free app, to manage your files. Here’s the official description from their website:

Zoomit is a revolution in managing content with the iPhone and iPod Touch. Combining application software with an intelligent accessory, zoomIt allows you to view, listen to, and share all of your photos, music, video and files on the go without the need to connect to your camera, Mac or PC.

One of the things that iPhone and iPod Touch owners have complained about, for some time, is no expandable memory. This card reader is SDHC compatible so you could potentilly more than double your iPhone’s capacity with this device. Although, ZoomMediaPLUS hasn’t mentioned it, the Zoomit should also work on the iPad.

The Zoomit is available for pre-order now. It is $59.95 USD, but if you pre-order you get $10 off. Additionally, the first 250 customers will get a free 4GB SD card! The accompanying app, will be a free download, from the App Store.

Pwnage Tool 3.1.5 Released!!

7 02 2010

Today, the good ‘ole iPhone Dev Team updated the Pwnage Tool to 3.1.5, to jailbreak iPhone OS 3.1.3. There are many warnings attached to this release, so read thoroughly, before attempting:

“On Tuesday, Apple released firmware 3.1.3 for the iPhone and iPod touches.  Unless you’ve personally observed a problem with the reporting of your battery percentage, there’s no reason to update to 3.1.3.  We know some of you will want to anyway.  Superbowl Sunday’s PwnageTool 3.1.5 for Mac OS X will let you do so safely, preserving your jailbreak and ultrasn0w unlock.  (If you use the blacksn0w unlock (at baseband 05.11.07), you need to stay at 3.1.2.)

iPhone 3G and 3GS unlockers should always be very wary to update their firmware.  This is no exception.  If you make a mistake along the way you may find yourself updating to official 3.1.3 in which case you will lose your unlock, possibly forever.

iPhone 3GS users (regardless of unlock) should stay away from this and all 3.1.3 jailbreak tools unless you know you have your “SHSH hashes” backed up via Cydia.  That’s because if you make a mistake you may find yourself stuck at official 3.1.3 with no way to jailbreak or come back down to 3.1.2 to jailbreak.

If you really truly feel that you need to update, this version creates a custom 3.1.3 IPSW for you to restore to on your iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS with early bootrom, iPod touch 1G, and iPod touch 2G with early bootrom.  If you don’t know if you have an early bootrom or not, please avoid updating until you learn more.

You don’t need to be pre-jailbroken on anything but the iPod touch 2G early bootrom.  And really for that device, it’s faster and easier to use redsn0w 0.9.4 as mentioned in our last post.  For that matter, if you have an ipt1g, iphone2g, or iphone3g(and don’t need an unlock), you should use redsn0w too (but version 0.9.3).  It’s faster and you won’t have to go through a full restore process (just do an update then run redsn0w, pointing it at 3.1.2 FW instead of 3.1.3).

If you have an iPhone 3GS, PwnageTool works if you’re currently at version 3.1.2 or below (down to 3.0).  You don’t need to be already jailbroken — PwnageTool will ask you if you’re jailbroken after you’ve created the IPSW.  Don’t use PwnageTool on the iPhone 3GS if you’re at 3.1.3, it just won’t work.  Downgrade to 3.1.2 using the methods described here.  If you can’t downgrade because you don’t have your 3GS 3.1.2 hashes on file with Cydia, you’ll need to sit out the 3.1.3 jailbreak.

We aren’t revealing any new exploits to Apple with this jailbreak. Everything here has been used before, it’s just a straightforward port of Pwnage2 and 24Kpwn to the new firmware.  It’s possible the new firmware was released largely to flush out new exploits before the next big release.  We won’t be biting.

We’d really like the above warnings and disclaimers to sink in. Please don’t download the files below and use them blindly.”

Pwnage Tool 3.1.5 is for Mac OS X only. You can download it here. I’ll have a tutorial coming soon.

Jailbreak Your iPhone on 3.1.3, with sn0wbreeze 3.1.3

4 02 2010

Dev team, iH8sn0w, have released an update to their jailbreak tool, sn0wbreeze. This update will jailbreak all Apple touch devices, on firmware 3.1.3, except those on the newer bootrom, (iPod Touch 3g, and newer iPhone 3GS).

Sn0wbreeze is similar to the iPhone Dev Team’s Pwnage Tool, in that it creates a custom firmware that you use to restore with, in iTunes. This is for Windows users, only. I will say that I tested the beta of their 3.1.2 release, and it failed miserably. I ended up having to do an official restore, after trying it. I was trying it on my iPhone 3GS that I purchased on launch day, and jailbroke shortly after, so I know it has the older boot rom. Use this tool at your own risk.

The steps are pretty easy. To prepare yourself, make sure you have a copy of your device’s 3.1.3 firmware handy. Typically, keeping it on your desktop is easiest. Then download sn0wbreeze 3.1.3. You can get it here. Run the exe.

Click the blue arrow to get started. Then select “Simple Mode”, and click the blue arrow again.

Click browse and navigate to the correct IPSW for your device.

In my case, I’m using an iPhone 3GS firmware, and I get this warning. Make sure you are certain your 3GS has the old boot rom. If your 3GS is already jailbroken on 3.1.2, you know you are safe. If you have updated to the official 3.1.3, you’re out of luck. If you are sure, click “I Understand”.

Click the blue arrow, once sn0wbreeze has verified your IPSW.

Decide if you need hacktivation, or not. If you are on an official carrier, you click “No”. If you need to unlock, you click “Yes.

sn0wbreeze will now build your custom IPSW.

Once it is finished you will see this screen, letting you know everything went well and you are now ready to restore in iTunes. If you are jailbreaking an iPhone 3GS, you will be asked to put your device in recovery mode. If you jailbroking an iPhone 3G or 2G, you will be asked to put your device in DFU mode.

To restore, just press Shift and click the Restore button, in iTunes, on your device’s summary screen. Then navigate to your new custom firmware. It should be on your desktop.

I will say again, I have not tried the restore on my iPhoen 3GS, so I can’t say if the jailbreak is successful, or not. I can say that building the IPSW was very easy. I used sn0wbreeze in Windows 7, on an iMac, via Parralels, and everything ran smooth. I would wait to hear some success stories, before jumping into this.

TRY THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK, NEITHER I, NOR THE CREATORS OF THIS SOFTWARE TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANYTHING THAT MAY HAPPEN TO YOUR DEVICE, DURING THIS PROCESS.

UPDATE: Seems I’m not the only one leary of this software. MuscleNerd, of the iPhone Dev Team posted this on Twitter today:

Most smart jailbreakers have not bothered with this update, as there are no new features, just bug fixes. Let’s just wait until we get more stable tools from our favourite jailbreak team. MuscleNerd does say “wait” for Pwnage Tool, so they must be working on it.

Parry Gripp’s iPad Video

3 02 2010

YouTube superstar, and frontman of the band Nerf Herder, Parry Gripp, has come up with another catchy number. This time it’s about the Apple iPad, and of course, has a video to go with it.

You may remember some of Parry’s other internet hit’s like “Chimpanzee Riding A Segway “, and with his band Nerf Herder, the theme from the WB’s “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”.

Apple No longer Signing OS 3.1.2. Beware iPhone 3GS Owners!!

3 02 2010

A few sources are reporting that today, Apple has stopped signing iPhone OS 3.1.2. What does this mean? Well, up until now, you may have been able to “Option – click” Restore, in iTunes, and point to firmware 3.1.2, so you could still jailbreak, but since Apple is no longer signing this firmware, the restore won’t work anymore, as Apple will only recognize your device’s signature, with OS 3.1.3.

This is especially bad, for iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3g owners who want to jailbreak and/or unlock. If you have had your SHSH saved by Cydia, you might be okay, but we don’t really know if the new firmware will be jailbroken, until the iPhone Dev Team or geohot gives the word that they have a solution.

Bottom line: If you have an iPhone 3GS of iPod Touch 3g, avoid this update, if you want to keep your jailbreak/unlock.

Apple’s iPad Might Ship With iSight Camera

3 02 2010

Mission: Repair, is reporting on their blog, that they have received their first shipment of iPad parts, and the interior aluminum frame definitely has a spot for an iSight camera. Does this mean the 1st gen iPad will have the iSight camera? Apple likes to keep little secrets like that, and let the consumer “discover” them for themselves.

Here’s some pics from Mission: Repair:

The rumour mill will continuously churn, until launch day, I’m sure.

More News on Jailbreaking OS 3.1.3

3 02 2010

Whenever there is a new iPhone OS released, there is, without fail, those who need their iPhone unlocked, accidentally update to the new firmware and lose their jailbreak and unlock. They immediately hit the forums complaining that there isn’t a jailbreak right away.

Well, news isn’t looking good, today from the redsn0w or blackra1n camps. iPhone Dev Team member, cpich3G has said:

“Apple closed a couple of bugs in the USB control codes in 3.1.3 including the one we used for 3.1.2 jailbreak.”

George Hotz (aka: geohot), creator of the blackra1n jailbreak, had this to say:

“There is no solution for 3.1.3 on newer devices or 05.12.01 There is no untethered jailbreak. I don’t know if/when these things will exist.”

The cat and mouse game continues! Will we see a jailbreak for 3.1.3, and or future firmwares and devices? Who knows, but there always be someone trying. Especially with the iPad coming this year.

redsn0w 0.9 Will Jailbreak OS 3.1.3 for iPhone, and iPhone 3G

2 02 2010

The iPhone Dev Team have confirmed that the current version of redsn0w will jailbreak iPhone OS 3.1.3 on certain devices. iPhone, iPhone 3G, and the 1st gen iPod Touch. This, of course, ONLY applies if you don’t care about the unlock.

Here’s what the Dev Team had to say:

If you care about your jailbreak and unlock, don’t update your device – 3G and 3G(S) owners should pay particular attention to this warning.

  • PwnageTool and redsn0w are not yet compatible with 3.1.3
  • There is no estimated release time for compatible tools (please don’t bug us about this).
  • Any information we have regarding this update will be posted here.
  • You can also follow us on twitter - @iphone_dev

Update 1:  [Don’t go near this if you have 3GS, newer ipt2G, or any ipt3G] Thanks to daring experimenters in the comments, we can confirm that yesterday’s redsn0w works for today’s 3.1.3 update for iPhone 2G.  Just point it at the 3.1.2 iPhone 2G IPSW after doing update or restore to 3.1.3.  So far we’ve only confirmed this for iPhone 2G.  (Note that if this does work for iPhone 3G too, you can *only* use it if you don’t care about the unlock.)

Update 2: [Don’t go near this if you have 3GS, newer ipt2G, or any ipt3G] Can confirm that this method works for iPhone 3G and iPod touch 1G too.  Don’t do it for iPhone 3G if you need an unlock though (really, don’t!). For older iPod touch 2G, we’ll need a small (1-character) change in redsn0w source.

Update 3: [Don’t go near this if you have 3GS, newer ipt2G, or any ipt3G] For those with older (non-MC) iPod touch 2G, we’ve compiled a special version of redsn0w meant just for you: Mac and Windows.  You guys can get in on the “3.1.2 loophole” too using this special version.  Don’t try this if you have a newer iPod Touch 2G or if you’re not completely sure what version you have.  And of course don’t try it for 3GS or ipt3G either.

That about does it for the 3.1.2 redsn0w loophole.  It can only be used by: those who don’t need the 3G/3GS unlock, and only owners of iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G (not unlockers!), iPod 1G, and iPod 2G older version.  Everyone else please wait for official support in the tools.

iPhone OS 3.1.3 Released. Jailbreakers: Do Not Update, Yet!

2 02 2010

Just one day after iTunes 9.0.3 is released, Apple has released iPhone OS 3.1.3. This update is for iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPod Touch. It contains a few bug fixes, but no new features, since 3.1.2.

To update, just connect your device to your computer. If iTunes doesn’t launch automatically, open it. If you are not prompted automatically to update, then just click “Update”, in your device summary. Then, just follow the above prompts.

WARNING: The iPhone Dev Team has advised users with jailbroken devices to hold off on this update, until then can confirm it is safe, and they are able to update their jailbreak tools (redsn0w and Pwnage Tool).

“Reviving Redsn0w” – The iPhone Dev Team

1 02 2010

The Dev Team have made an official post on there blog regarding the new redsn0w. Here’s what they have to say.

It sure has been a while since we last saw a firmware update from Apple.  (And by the way, which will come first…the iPad wifi, FW version 3.1.3/4.0 for iPhones, or the new iPhone itself?)  Anyway, while we’re waiting, we updated redsn0w to be compatible with FW 3.1.2.  We also added a few new features!

redsn0w 0.9.2

It’s actually been in “open beta” for a while now, and those of you who already follow @MuscleNerd on twitter may already have tried the new redsn0w.  You can read all about it and download it from our our wikee.  Compared to our last release, we’ve given you the ability to quickly change your boot or recovery logos and enable “verbose” booting.  And for those of you who want to experiment with your internet tethering options over cellular, try version 0.9.3 in the extra links at the bottom of that wikee page.

After reading the brief Q&A on our wikee, feel free to ask any questions below in the comments.  Briefly though, if you’re already happy with your current jailbroken system (whether it’s via PwnageTool or blackra1n), and if you don’t want boot logos, then you can safely ignore this post and we’ll continue the wait for Apple’s next release together :) Otherwise go ahead and try some new boot logos using redsn0w, or use it for fresh jailbreaks.  If you use it on an already jailbroken phone, be sure to checkmark “Already pwned” and don’t reinstall Cydia again (doing so will probably make Cydia lose track of what it has installed).

Caution: if you’re using the ultrasn0w or yellowsn0w unlocks then don’t be tempted to update to official 3.1.2 just to use redsn0w (and remember, redsn0w still works at 3.0 anyway).  If you update to official 3.1.2, redsn0w will still work but you’ll lose ultrasn0w and yellowsn0w.  There is geohot’s blacksn0w for those who updated to official 3.1.2 but there are still wifi problems with the unlock at that firmware in a small number of cases.

This version of redsn0w does not provide an untethered jailbreak for those of you with brand new iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 2G, or any iPod Touch 3G.  redsn0w will jailbreak those but it will still be a tethered jailbreak until some new exploit is found and released.

As always, redsn0w does not update your firmware version.  You use it with whatever firmware is already running on your device (and you point redsn0w to the IPSW corresponding to that firmware already running on your device).

iTunes 9.0.3 Released

1 02 2010

Apple has released an iTunes update today, for Mac and Windows, bringing us up to 9.0.3. iTunes 9.0.3 comes with a few bug fixes, but no new features, since 9.0.2.

• iTunes no longer ignores your “Remember password for purchases” setting.
• Addresses problems with syncing some Smart Playlists and Podcasts with iPod.
• Resolves a problem recognizing when iPod is connected.
• Addresses issues that affect stability and performance.

The iPhone Dev Team have confirmed that this update is safe for all us jailbreakers out there, so no reason not to updates.

If you don’t have the update yet, you can download it, here.

New Theme in Cydia: Angelina Wrona Theme

31 01 2010

I’ve got a new theme in Cydia today, called “Angelina Wrona Theme”. It is based on the art of Canadian artist Angelina Wrona. It includes lockbackground, slider, wallpaper, dock, and status bar.

You can get this theme in Cydia, now, under the ModMyi repo, for free.

redsn0w 0.9 Released! Supports iPod Touch 3G

31 01 2010

Earlier today MuscleNerd, of The iPhone Dev Team, announced on Twitter, that redsn0w 9.0 is now out of beta.

I wrote about the 3rd beta of redsn0w, just a little while ago. You can read the article on jailbreaking your iPhone with the new redsn0w, here. This is a really great, stable, jailbreak. It is not as fast as blackra1n, but faster isn’t always better. I would recommend redsn0w over blackra1n, at this point in time.

Now that redsn0w 0.9 is out of beta, it also supports iPod Touch 3G, and newer bootrom ipt3g and iPhone 3GS, with a tethered jailbreak.

You can get resn0w 0.9 for Mac and Windows from the redsn0w wiki, here.

iPad Wallpaper for Your Desktop

30 01 2010

I found this while browsing the web for iPad related news and stuff. I’m not sure if this is the official wallpaper from the iPad, or if it’s a great rendering, but it sure looks official. I grabbed it from a Google images search, and forgot to take note of the source. I appologize to who ever did the work here. I’m just sharing. Click the image for the full size (1280 X 800).

iPad Theme for iPhone

27 01 2010

Decided to make a simple iPad theme for my iPhone. Thought I would share it with you. It comes with Lock screen, Wallpaper, and Dock.

I have submitted this theme for hosting on Cydia, via the ModMyi repo, but you can get it here, if you know how to install themes, yourself. Enjoy.

UPDATE: This theme is now live, in Cydia!

What is Apple’s iPad Missing?

27 01 2010

Wow. That’s a loaded question, isn’t it? There has been a lot of iPad bashing on the internet, since the announcement of Apple’s “revolutionary” device.

Here’s my opinion: If you were expecting this device to replace your netbook, you’re probably disappointed.

No OS X

It does seem like Apple is going after the netbook market here, but this is not really a “computer”, in the sense that a netbook is. Although the iPhone OS looks pretty amazing on the iPad, it is not the “Mobile OSX” people were hoping for.

No Usable External Ports

There are no external ports, besides the 30 pin dock connection. Couldn’t we have gotten one USB port? There is a USB adapter, but is only for cameras, as far as I know. There is an open API, for this device, so maybe we’ll see some more development with that. They is also a VGA adapter, for video out.

No Multi-tsking or Flash Support

No multi-tasking? Really? Even with that 1Ghz processor in there, you couldn’t figure out multi-tasking? While we’re on the topic of things running in the background, no Adobe Flash support?! Apple has called this “the best way to surf the web”, yet you won’t be able to see half of it, without Flash. Maybe they are banking on HTML5 taking over from Flash? Only Jobs knows.

No Camera

No camera on the front, for video chat. This seems like the perfect device for iChat and video conferencing. Just as we’d like to see this on our iPhone, it even seems more appropriate for the iPad. Although I agree with not having a camera on the back. That would only make this the most awkward camera ever. FSM.com found that the use of a camera is implemented in the SDK. Is this for 3rd party camera devices? A feature that just wasn’t revealed? Who knows, but it seems we will see a camera eventually.

Customization

This is something that wasn’t talked about, very much. From the pictures and videos, we can see that you can change the wallpaper of your homescreen, but is that it? I like that they are starting to learn from the jailbreak community, but they need to open it up a little more here. Same goes for the iPhone and iPod Touch. They could even manage themes, via iTunes.

A Good Name ;)

iPad is catchy and meets the requirements of, one syllable, preceded by the letter “i”, but “pad” doesn’t seem very “techy”. I would have preferred “iSlate” or “iTablet” or even “iMagicMiracleUnicornRainbow”. Ah, whatever. It’s fine.

These are just a few things that I feel are missing from the iPad, and in theory, (and in precedent), can be fixed by the jailbreak community. Let’s get “Backgrounder” and “Winterboard” on the iPad, and we’re getting somewhere.

What is cool about the iPad? Just about everything else. This really seems to be a great device, but, as usual, Apple isn’t using it to it’s full capabilities, in the 1st generation. Look at the first iPhone, compared to the iPhone 3GS. If they didn’t do this, what would make us want to buy the 2nd generation iPad in 2011? It’s just business.

After thinking about it all day, I think I will end up getting an iPad. It is something my whole family can benefit from, and some of the flaws can be fixed with firmware updates.

Apple’s Tablet Announced: It’s the “iPad”

27 01 2010

UPDATE: Watch Apple’s Keynote, announcing the iPad. Click here.

Finally, all the rumours can stop. Apple’s new device is called the “iPad”. It’s a giant iPod Touch, but the UI seems to be a cross between the iPhone OS and OSX. It’s looks really cool, but who is it for? I already have an iPhone, iPod Touch, and a MacBook. I don’t feel like I need this product. Well, let’s see what it’s got.

Here’s the details:

- .5 inches thin, 1.5 pounds. 9.56 inches high X 7.47 inches wide.

- LED-backlit glossy widescreen Multi-Touch, 9.7 inch IPS display, 1024-by-768-pixel resolution at 132 pixels per inch (ppi).

- Fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating

- powered by Apples own 1GHz Apple A4 chip

- WiFi 802.11n, and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR

- Accelerometer and Compass

- comes in 16GB for $499, 32GB for $599,and 64GB for $699. Add $130, if you want 3G. WiFi models shipping March 27th. 3G models shipping April 27th.

- 3G is optional: $14.99 for 250MB and $29.99 for unlimited, on AT&T, in the US. No contract required. International rates coming in June. All 3G iPads are unlocked.

- 10 hours battery life, over a month of standby

- external speaker and microphone

- external buttons same as iPhone: sleep, volume up/down, mute, and home

- iPhone based OS, almost all iPhone/iPod Touch apps will work on the iPad.

- iPhone familier apps including Mobile Safari, Mobile ITunes, App Store, Google Maps, and much more.

- iPhoto-esque app, for pics

- on screen QWERTY keyboard

- HD movies and TV shows

- new app called “iBooks”, for reading eBooks, with new store to  purchase them

- iWork for iPad. Keynote, Numbers, and Pages all get an iPad makeover. They will be $9.99 each.

So, what’s your take on the new device? Is it as revolutionary as they claim? Or is it just a giant iPod Touch? For me, the real revolution will be, when they make the iPhone do all this, in the summer. Can you imagine that 1Ghz chip in your iPhone? That would “scream”. The iPad is great for folks who don’t really need a laptop and don’t want to go as small as an iPod Touch.

The iPad SDK is now being downloaded by developers. They’ve got 2 months to get their apps ready. How long before we see a “jailbroken” iPad OS? Will it be before we even get the hardware? In my opinion, this is where things will get exciting. Let’s see what the jailbreak community can do with the iPad!!

EXCLUSIVE!! Hands on Apple Tablet!!

26 01 2010

Enough with all the rumours. I was able to get my hands on the non-existent Apple device, everyone is talking about. Introducing the “iTabPadSlate”.

Okay, joking aside, we have been overwhelmed with rumours about a tablet device from Apple, apparently being unveiled this week. We only have one more day to wait, until we get the official specs, pricing, and availability.

If the rumours are true, we’ll see a 10″, or so, tablet type device, running an iPhone type of operating system, that will do just about everything an iPhone can do, and more. My question is: who wants this? If you already have a laptop computer and an iPhone/iPod Touch, do you need a tablet? I’m excited to see what it can do, but my wallet is still in my pocket, at this point.

I’ll have a full report tomorrow evening. Engadget and Gizmodo will most likely be live blogging from the event, at 10am tomorrow morning.

PS3 Hacked by Geohot!!

22 01 2010

UPDATE: Geohot has released his PS3 exploit. Hacking community…GO!!

Geohot, original iPhone hacker, has announced that he has hacked the PS3! XBOX 360 and the Wii, have been hacked to play “Back-up” games for a while now, but no one has been able to crack Sony’s entry into this generations gaming consoles.

Here’s what geohot had to say on his blog:

“I have read/write access to the entire system memory, and HV level access to the processor. In other words, I have hacked the PS3. The rest is just software. And reversing. I have a lot of reversing ahead of me, as I now have dumps of LV0 and LV1.

3 years, 2 months, 11 days…thats a pretty secure system

Took 5 weeks, 3 in Boston, 2 here, very simple hardware cleverly applied, and some not so simple software.

Shout out to George Kharrat from iPhoneMod Brasil for giving me this PS3 a year and a half ago to hack. Sorry it took me so long :)

As far as the exploit goes, I’m not revealing it yet. The theory isn’t really patchable, but they can make implementations much harder. Also, for obvious reasons I can’t post dumps. I’m hoping to find the decryption keys and post them, but they may be embedded in hardware. Hopefully keys are setup like the iPhone’s KBAG.

A lot more to come…”

Great job George! Let’s see what you can do with it.

redsn0w 0.9beta3 Released! How to Jailbreak iPhone 3G [Video]

22 01 2010

The iPhone Dev Team have released a beta version of redsn0w 0.9. Here’s the official details:

What is it?

A cross-platform jailbreaking, unlocking, and customizing tool for iPhones and iPod touches. Customizations include boot logos, recovery logos, and “verbose” boot. It’s a standalone program that doesn’t use iTunes (no custom IPSWs are involved).

The download links are at the bottom of this page (but please read the whole page anyway!).

We’ve been offering redsn0w in various incarnations over the years (including poorlad’s Windows version of QuickPwn). The most recent release before this one was redsn0w 0.8, which targeted Apple firmware 3.0/3.0.1.

What devices, platforms, and FW versions are supported?

The beta supports:

All iPhones and iPod touches except the iPod touch 3G
Windows and Mac OSX (x86)
Apple firmware 3.0 and 3.1.2
When it’s out of beta, it will support the iPod touch 3G, PPC OSX, and Linux.

If you need a carrier unlock, redsn0w will handle iPhone 2G by itself (by installing our BootNeuter utility). For the 3G and 3GS, use Cydia after you’re jailbroken to install ultrasn0w (baseband 04.26, preferred) or blacksn0w (baseband 05.11).

How is it different from PwnageTool?

redsn0w doesn’t require a system restore like PwnageTool does (it doesn’t even use iTunes at all). On the other hand, PwnageTool can prevent your baseband from being upgraded when you upgrade your firmware, preserving your unlock. (redsn0w doesn’t touch your baseband but it doesn’t help preserve it during an upgrade either).

redsn0w works by modifying your current filesystem, so your existing baseband, data and applications should remain intact.

How is it different from blackra1n?

It differs from blackra1n because:

It uses our original Pwnage bootrom exploit for iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, and iPod 1G. (Because it’s a bootrom exploit, it can’t be fixed by Apple without a new hardware release.) Note that redsn0w 0.9 does use the USB exploit for iPhone 3GS and iPod 2G running 3.1.2, but that exploit will be fixed in Apple’s next FW release.
It offers custom logos and verbose boot
It installs Cydia without needing a separate download
It’s not as fast (but redsn0w handles more variations)
What if I have a late-model device?

If you have a late-model iPhone 3GS, or if you have an iPod touch 2G whose serial number begins with “MC”, you can use redsn0w to jailbreak but you are currently restricted to “tethered” rebooting. That means you need to connect your device to a computer to complete the boot after a reset. Also, these devices cannot have custom logos.

redsn0w will ask you whether or not you fit in this category when used with the iPhone 3GS or iPod touch 2G. If you have a late-model device and don’t give redsn0w the correct answer, you will likely need to do a system restore to recover from the mistake.

To do a tethered boot after your late-model device resets for some reason, either run redsn0w again and select “Just boot tethered right now”, or run blackra1n.

What if I’m already jailbroken?

If you’re already jailbroken (by whatever means), redsn0w can still be used to change your boot logos, revert back to the stock logos, or switch verbose booting on and off. By selecting “Already Pwned” you can bypass the steps normally needed to enter the jailbroken state.

How long should it take

You should see a picture of a drive (“Downloading Jailbreak Data”) within 30 seconds of launching the jailbreak (after you’ve made your custom selections). It should then reboot and you should see a running pwnapple while the process is underway. It should finish within a minute or two after that, and will reboot on its own.

Is it safe?

The Windows version has been tested by small groups of volunteers on IRC and our blog since mid-January. That being said, this is still a beta and if things go wrong you may have to do a system restore…so make sure your data and pictures are synced before trying the beta.

Beta feedback

redsn0w is in beta until we get iPod Touch 3G, PPC OSX, and Linux support added. In the meantime, please send any feedback to MuscleNerd (either gmail or iphone-dev.org), or tweet with a #redsn0w tag. Please detail your device, OS, and any problem you find.

I thought I would try it out, and see if it works like I remeber. On an iPhone 3G, it works perfectly. Simple instructions. Installs the current version of Cydia right away, with no extra steps, (unlike blackra1n). I could not get this to work on my 3GS. After going into recovery mode (3GS does not use DFU mode), the iPhone just goes to a black screen, and I never saw the RAM disc screen or the pwnapple.

I made this real time video, to show redsn0w 0.9 in action. This is how to jailbreak an iPhone 3G, with redsn0w 0.9:

Apple Phasing Out Google Support on iPhone?

20 01 2010

Many rumours are starting to surface, regarding iPhone OS 4.0. The latest one, is that iPhone’s default search engine will be Bing, and not Google. It’s no secret that there has been some animosity between these 2 tech giants, with the Android OS out there, and now the Nexus One, Google’s own handset, but could Apple separate itself from Google altogether?

Earlier this month, we heard about Apple purchasing the online ad firm, Quatrro Wireless. This could get them away from Google ads popping up on the iPhone, and making their own ad revenue.

We have also heard, last October, that Apple purchased a Company called PlaceBase, who produced a maps API called PushPin, which offers the same services as Google Maps. This could change the Google Maps app on the iPhone to there own proprietary maps app.

Personally, I don’t think the iPhone will be void of all things Google, but I do see it being, not integrated into the OS, as much as it now, and rather having Google apps, in the App Store. Out of the millions of iPhone users, around the world, a good chunk of us use Google products in one way or another, and need them on our iPhones.

Apple’s Jan 27th event may shed some light on this, if they announce the new firmware then.

OS 3.1.2 the Last Update Ever, for the Original iPhone?

19 01 2010

The folks over at the BoyGeniusReport posted some interesting details of the supposed iPhone OS 4.0 today. Their trusty Apple contact “leaked” these details for the new iPhone OS.

  • There will be multi-touch gestures OS-wide. (Would make sense for that as the rumored OS for the iTablet is close if not the same as the iPhone)
  • “A few new ways” to run applications in the background — multitasking.
  • Many graphical and UI changes to make navigating through the OS easier and more efficient. We haven’t had this broken down, but we can only hope for improved notifications, a refreshed homescreen, etc.
  • The update will supposedly be available for only the iPhone 3G and 3GS, but will “put them ahead in the smartphone market because it will make them more like full-fledged computers” more than any other phone to date. Everyone is “really excited.”
  • The last piece of information is the most vague, but apparently there will be some brand new syncing ability for the contacts and calendar applications.

What peaked my interest here, was the 4th point, that says the new OS will only be available for iPhone 3G and 3GS. Are original iPhone owners being left in the cold this time? The original iPhone is not even 3 years old yet, and it’s already obsolete? Looks like original iPhone owners will be expected to upgrade their hardware if they want to take advantage of the new firmware. My suggestion, though, is to wait until the summer, when a new iPhone is sure to be released.

Apple’s Jan 27th event, is the supposed day the new OS will be announcement, along with the possible announced of Apple’s much talked about tablet. Only 8 more days until we find out.

Apple Tablet Confirmed for Jan 27th Apple Event?

18 01 2010

The Apple Tablet seems to be the worst kept secret ever, as people in the tech community have been saying “it’s coming” for over a year now. Well, this invite to Apple’s Jan 27th event may be the confirmation we’ve been waiting for:

What exactly is the “latest creation”? iSlate, is my guess.
